Discovery Through Unity: Dundee's Interfaith Patchwork Celebrates Diversity

jsia999

Baha'is of Dundee have for many years participated in interfaith activities. An interfaith group has existed in Dundee for almost 4 decades.

This year Faith and Belief (Dundee and Tayside) will be supporting InterFaith Scotland and Dundee City Council at the launch of Scottish InterFaith Week in Dundee City Chambers, where religious and civic leaders, including the Lord Provost, and inter faith activists from all over Scotland will be participating in a conference on the theme of Discovery.

As Dundee is the city where Captain Scott's ship "RRS Discovery" is berthed, this seemed an appropriate theme. This prompted Carrie Varjavandi, Chairperson of Faith and Belief Dundee (aka FaB Dundee) to launch an arts project which will have its unveiling at the SIFW launch in Dundee on 12 November.

Working over a period of six months with over 60 participants from diverse faith and belief backgrounds, a multi coloured patchwork was created, featuring the ship but superimposed with individual interpretations of the theme. Participants included Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Latter Day Saints, Baha'is as well as Humanists and Agnostics. A special preview evening is being held for the women who contributed to this FaBulous piece of art. This will be the first time they will see all their work together in a single panel.

People from such diverse communities working together to create this work of art created a feeling of unity and will also inspire a sense of a unified vision in those who view it.

On Tuesday it will be officially unveiled by the Scottish Government's Minister for Communities at the Conference in the City Chambers.
